As Billboard.com’s Girl Group Week comes to a close, we wanted to reveal the results of our Girl Group Week Readers’ Poll, which allowed pop fans to vote for their favorite girl group albums, songs, music videos and much more. With hundreds of thousands of votes cast in just three days, it’s time to congratulate Spice Girls, 2NE1 and Fifth Harmony for emerging from the crowded field of girl groups and coming out on top in some of the biggest categories!
2NE1, the all-girl K-pop group that has recently made an impact in the States, had its album “Crush” voted as the favorite girl group album as a write-in vote, besting full-lengths by Little Mix, Spice Girls and Destiny’s Child. The group also was voted the most fashionable girl group, earning 30 percent of the votes in the category.
Meanwhile, the Spice Girls’ “Wannabe” was voted the fans’ favorite girl group single, with the U.K. collective’s only No. 1 Hot 100 single trumping favorites like TLC’s “Waterfalls” and Destiny’s Child’s “Say My Name.” And although voters dubbed the Spice ladies the most overrated girl group, Ginger, Sporty, Posh, Baby and Scary also won the category “Girl Group That Needs To Make a Comeback.” Start practicing those dance moves now!
Although Fifth Harmony only won one category — Most Promising New Girl Group — they did so impressively, taking home a whopping 96 percent of the votes. And finally, provocative pop duo t.A.T.u. also emerged as winners from the Readers’ Poll, with fans proclaiming them the most underrated girl group as well as naming their “All The Things She Said” clip as their favorite girl group music video.

2NE1 sure knows how to enjoy their time on stage every single time. Whenever they perform it’s like a festival. They said, “Now we’re really ready to play.” The group recently released their new album Crush, and they said themselves that it’s “like their 1st album.”
“Our thirst for a full length album has been resolved. We’ve become accustomed to staying busy, we want to show you more on stage, and we’ve been wanting to sing new songs. But we couldn’t, and that was frustrating. We held our first world tour for 2 years, but unfortunately we didn’t have new songs to sing.”
This album was even more special for CL. For the first time ever she participated as a songwriter and composer, and thanks to Yang Hyun Suk’s special attention, the album was released on the talented singer’s birthday. At most she started composing the song 2-3 months ago, and she’s been praised by everyone for the completeness of the music.
“While making this album, and while we were recording the songs I made, our members have developed a closeness. Although my role is large right now, the other members’ roles can be larger in other songs. Each and every one of our members is very important. That’s what I realized while working on this album.”
2NE1 went head to head against popular girl group Girls’ Generation. Girls’ Generation had announced their comeback first. Girls’ Generation were scheduled to release their new mini album title song “Mr.Mr” on the 18th, and were supposed to hold their first comeback stage on Mnet’s “M Countdown” on the 20th. The entire album was supposed to be released on the 24th. 2NE1’s full album release and comeback was scheduled for the same day on the 24th.
However, SM had to suddenly delay their comeback. This was due to Girls’ Generation’s “Mr.Mr” music video data being corrupted. They revealed that they would be announcing a new comeback date because of their damaged music video. YG used the strategy of delaying their album release date as well. YG revealed that they would be releasing the comeback on the 26th for CL’s birthday, who created 3 of the songs.
But suddenly Girls’ Generation decided to release their full album on the 24th, and 2NE1’s album released followed thereafter. The two groups were receiving a lot of attention even before their album releases. They both raised expectations with their similarly timed comebacks.
“Our tour was scheduled for March 2nd and 3rd. We didn’t feel very good about not having any new songs for our first tour. Since it was our first world tour we did it happily and worked really hard, but we were eager to hold a world tour after a new album release so that we could perform new songs onstage. That’s why we decided on a comeback date in late February.”
2NE1 overtook Girls’ Generation on music charts and rose to the top. Recently they also took home the number 1 trophy on a music program, and received praise for their unique color in the new album.
“I think it’s really great for girl groups to be active for a long time. In a way, it feels like 2NE1 has overcome a big mountain. Girls’ Generation has probably had very similar feelings. And it’s really admirable that they’re very active in other areas. We support woman power, so we hope for many other such groups.”
2NE1 was then asked, “But aren’t you falling behind in terms of romance?” and the members put on bemused expressions. “That’s true… We keep getting asked about our love lives because it’s White Day, but we really do fall behind,” CL answered, unable to hide her sorrow.
The members are at an age where they should be actively dating. When about to be asked whether they were limiting themselves or not being given the opportunity to do so, Bom said, “We don’t have the opportunity.” CL said, “It’s not too good to be close. There’s a lot of ‘You can’t do this,’ and there are lots of conservative opinions because we’re like little sisters. For the older members, it’s because they don’t go out. To be honest Dara deeply contemplated on the matter.” Dara said, “Yang Hyun Suk and other artists were more worried than I was. I should hurry up and relieve them of this worry,” and let out a big sigh.
“There’s no group like 2NE1. Nor will there be one in the future. We’re confident in that. We’re different in our personalities, our looks, our preferences, and in everything. Whether good or bad, we can’t confidently say that there’s never been another group like us.”
For the past 2 years while they were preparing for this album, 2NE1 members had to endure through a tough time. They didn’t know it at the time, but now that they’re looking back at that period, they feel as if they’ve overcome a huge mountain. Like CL said, 2NE1’s confidence and passion for performing has grown.
And during that time the relationship between the members has grown much deeper, and all the hard times paid off in this new album. It was a time when they could have easily fallen. But the girls didn’t lean on one another, and instead won through with each member’s strong mentality. That’s why 2NE1 has come back stronger. Now that they’ve overcome such a difficult time, they’re ready for whatever else may come their way.
“We don’t know what that might be. Bumps come up in the road unexpectedly. We think we’ve overcome each situation very well, and we want to do so for a long, long time.”
To commemorate their return with their first full length album in 4 years, the ladies of 2NE1 sat down for an interview with reporters about their comeback with ‘CRUSH‘ to open up about the thoughts going through their heads.
The girls have already racked up quite the success with their album release, topping not only domestic charts but international ones as well, and making their mark as the highest charting K-Pop album on the Billboard 200 – a well-deserved result.
“It is our first full length album in 4 years, and different from our 1st album it contains completely new songs so it feels as if we actually put out our first full length album now. We are really enjoying the fact that we can show you a lot of new songs and stages, so we’ve been able to quench our thirst that has been building up as there is a lot that we’ve been wanting to show you. When we had our first world tour, we felt some regret as there was no new music to show on stage. So to make our comeback with a full length album, we feel happy,” the girls said.
As this new album contains quite a few works that have a direct hand of participation from CL, she stated, “I started composing last year. I really never imagined 2NE1 as a whole would sing the songs I made. It started when I just wrote songs as if I was writing a diary. I am grateful as well fascinated that it all progressed so naturally and fast. There are more songs that I have written up, but the songs that matched the best with 2NE1 were included in this album. It was something I started just for fun, but Yang Hyun Suk boss even diligently checked up on it. ‘CRUSH’ was the title of the song I wrote, but he even made it into the name of the album, so I was really touched.”
The interview of course also addressed the girls’ competition with Girls’ Generation for it’s not everyday when the biggest two girl groups in Korea have their promotional periods overlap.
The girls remarked, “Starting a year ago, we had the world tour scheduled for March, and to be able to show new music stages on the tour, we had originally planned for a comeback at the end of February. As Girls’ Generation are our sunbaenims, it’s so cool to see them actively promote in various fields for a long time. We want to be like that too. Rather than comparing or calling it a competition, we sincerely cheer on the power of girl groups. We want to see a lot of these groups and see us all do well together. As our promotions are overlapping, we saw their stage and felt that our colors and Girls’ Generation colors are different. They are showing a stage that we can’t do.”
Reporters also brought up the question of dating for 2NE1 as a few of Girls’ Generation members have gone public with their relationships this year.
CL said with a smile, “And it’s White Day today too… We recognize that we’re quite behind in the dating aspect compared to Girls’ Generation.” Dara hilariously added, “Let’s try to catch up!” whilePark Bom lamented, “It seems like there just isn’t much opportunity to date.”
Whether you’re a Blackjack or not, it’s hard to deny that 2NE1 has individuality in the Kpop scene with their distinct music style. And reporters asked the girls if they felt the same way and to elaborate on 2NE1’s unique style.
“We don’t think there will be a group quite like 2NE1. There wasn’t one before and we don’t think there will be one like us. Whether people consider 2NE1 good or bad, we can say confidently that there is no group like us. If our color was red for example, if we tried to be blue instead, we’d feel a burden and we wouldn’t be able to last. If we are red, then we have to express that red more vibrantly,” the girls replied.
So what is 2NE1’s ultimate goal for the future? “We don’t know what it would be. Whether it’s a time of growth or a time of risk, it seems like they just suddenly come upon us without us expecting it. Whatever it is, we think it is most important that we take it moment by moment and get through it. We finally think we have figured out how to sing and enjoy the stage. We want to do this for a long long time. And since we don’t come out on TV that often and don’t have many opportunities to interact with everyone, we want to express 2NE1 news, thoughts, and hearts through interviews at least.”
The girls also spoke on their love for concerts with their second world tour ahead of them. “We have won #1 on music programs and experienced various other things, but there is nothing more fun than a concert. Our goal is to wrap up our second world tour in Korea as an encore concert. People will only come if we promote our hardest with ‘Crush’ right? We want to meet with many fans at our concerts,” the group said with a smile.
It seems like the girls aren’t the only ones excited for their world tour as their music video for “Come Back Home” has already surpassed the 5 million mark with eager Blackjacks showing their support as they count down to the days they’ll be able to catch the 2NE1 in concert!
2NE1 talked about competing against Girls’ Generation.
Recently, 2NE1(CL, Park Bom, Sandara Park, Gong Min Ji) had an interview at a hotel located in Yeouido, Seoul, and talked about competing against Girls’ Generation, who released a new album at around the same time.
Girls’ Generation released their new mini album, ‘Mr.Mr.,’ on March 24th, and 2NE1 have released their new album, ‘CRUSH’, on March 26th.
CL said, “Our world tour date was decided from one year ago. We could not perform any new songs during our last tour, and we did pushed ourselves hard so that we can present new songs during this world tour. But, we never expected that we would compete with Girls’ Generation.”
She went on, “They are our seniors, and they showed a great number of different looks during many years. We are incomparable, because we are so different. We have our own characters, and we have no similarities at all.”
Sandara Park also said, “It is not easy to be popular for that long. Girls’ Generation are a big group, and their songs always get welcomed. They are also way better on entertainment shows.”
2NE1 expressed envies for Yoon Ah and Soo Young’s relationship. CL said, “I also want to be in a publicly known relationship. I think we have too many guys around us.”
2NE1 members made many great compliments about Girls’ Generation, but they also talked about their strengths clearly. CL said, “We have a great confidence in our performance and music.”
On the other hand, 2NE1 are continuing promotion of their double title tracks, ‘COME BACK HOME’, and ‘GOTTA BE YOU’.
