K-pop acts 2NE1, Epik High, Winner, Big Bang and Psy’s killer collaborative performances made their YG Family 2014 Galaxy Tour: Power in Singapore concert one for the books.
SINGAPORE: The audience at Saturday’s (Sep 13) YG Family 2014 Galaxy Tour: Power in Singapore concert at the Singapore Indoor Stadium was all riled up even before the concert started, with the crowd screaming and cheering while the introduction video played.
So it was little wonder that concert-goers went absolutely crazy, leaping to their feet and screaming when K-pop quartet 2NE1 burst onto the stage, kicking off the show with their hit songs Crush and Fire. Next up was Epik High followed by the newly formed boy band Winner. The members of Winner were slowly lowered from the ceiling on suspended platforms, and sang throughout their descent. Their performance seemed slightly raw when compared to that of their seniors, and they appeared a tad nervous about performing in Singapore for the first time, but that didn’t stop the 10,000-strong audience from cheering for Winner all the same, as the boys introduced themselves in stilted English.
But it was Winner’s seniors, K-pop boy band Big Bang, that really got the crowd going with energetic songs like Fantastic Baby and Crayon, despite being one member short. Squeals of delight could be heard from the girls in the audience the second Big Bang’s G-Dragon appeared on stage.
Many of them could barely contain their excitement and jumped up and down at their seats, before rushing forward to snap photos of the band’s charismatic leader. Not to be outdone, Big Bang’s label mate Psy wowed the crowds with his iconic songs Gentleman and Gangnam Style, as well as a number of his lesser-known songs like Father and Champion.
At the end of the show, all five acts – 2NE1, Epik High, Winner, Big Bang and Psy – came together for the big finish and danced to Gangnam Style before repeatedly thanking the fans for their support and exiting the stage. As strong as their individual performances were, it was the many interesting collaborations and crossovers between the YG Entertainment artistes that really set Saturday’s concert apart from the groups’ solo gigs.
Epik High got together with Big Bang’s Taeyang to sing the latter’s new song Eyes, Nose, Lips. Big Bang sang 2NE1’s signature tune I Love You and even copied 2NE1’s feminine dance moves and poses.
These were just some of the eye-popping collaborative performances that had the audience cheering in delight over the course of the massive concert which lasted about three hours.Even though it lacked the flow present in solo K-pop gigs, all in all, the YG Family 2014 Galaxy Tour: Power in Singapore was a great show that allowed audiences a chance to catch a variety of performances in a single evening, and proved that variety is indeed the spice of life.
